Left a widow with seven children in 1925, Sallie Goodman faced the future with her usual optimism and faith. At 60 years of age, Goodman moved to Dallas with one of her sons, Dewey. On Aug. 24, 1925, they purchased a small cafeteria that consisted of a counter with 13 stools and 8 tables. Over the years, the Highland Park Cafeteria has increased in popularity, counting many celebrities and Dallas elite among its thousands of daily customers. The cafeteria s menu includes entrees, salads, cakes, desserts, vegetables, breads, soups and pies. It also caters gatherings of 20 to 200 guests and offers private dining rooms, such as the Shakespeare Room that holds up to 65 people and is equipped with a plasma television, computer connections, podium, microphone and sound system.
