Abingdon Montessori School Welcome to www.AbingdonSchoool.org. Abingdon Montessori School began in 1970, and is accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education. Just as no two children are exactly the same, no two Montessori schools are exactly alike. At Abingdon, we try to combine the wisdom of Dr. Montessori's theories of human development with a recognition of the qualitative and quantitative realities of the contemporary child's world. We are devoted to the Montessori method but are not bound to it. We are open to and eager to apply new concepts that complement the Montessori curriculum. Read more We perceive our basic function as one of helping children to learn whenever they are ready to do so. We do not stress the acquisition of a body of knowledge as such, but rather the development of independence and self-esteem that benefits the child physically, emotionally, and intellectually. The teacher's role in this situation is one of a learning "guide"-a complementary helper, not an aggressive authoritarian. We do not practice discrimination based upon race, color, national origin, religion, or political beliefs. This non-discriminatory policy applies to both students and staff. No religion is taught in school. We admit children on a first-come basis, attempting to maintain the gender and age balance necessary to the normal functioning of the Montessori classroom. In addition to the basic Montessori curriculum, Abingdon offers instruction in science, social studies, music, art, computer skills, and physical development. Abingdon Montessori School hours are 9 a.m. to 11: 50 a.m., five days a week, except holidays. |
